Happy Mother’s Day! This afternoon I will have the privilege of helping to provide hospitality to some special mothers and their children at Nazareth Hall. They are refugees from Central America who have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and are in the process of deportation. They are supposed to be released from ICE today and will receive welcome and assistance at Nazareth in order to connect with family members across the U.S. while they wait for their cases to be adjudicated. These refugees are fortunate in that they are not being sent to the family detention prisons in Dilley or Karnes, Texas.
I will be helping to make connections with family members for travel arrangements and will no doubt hear some heart-wrenching stories of the journey. How appropriate that the space that the Sisters of Loretto have provided for these women and children is called Nazareth. On this Mother’s Day I can only imagine that the mother of Jesus is filling the halls with her own loving hospitality through those who offer food, clothing, showers and safety to whoever and however many arrive at the door.
Happy Mother’s Day, Our Lady of Guadalupe!
